The Requirement
A 222-tonne reduction in general waste was achieved by Axil, following innovations to improve waste segregation as well as installing new equipment and rolling out new processes.
Birmingham Wholesale Market is the largest integrated market in the UK, providing fish, poultry, fruit, and vegetables to wholesale customers and the public. The multi-million purpose-built premises is a joint venture between the tenants and Birmingham City Council. It is located at The Hub, Birmingham, and houses 70 tenants across an eight-acre site.
Waste Challenges
Prior to Axil commencing services on site, the market’s general waste and dry mixed recycling (DMR) was collected in the same Refuse Collection Vehicle, amounting to 1324 tonnes per annum. Axil now has 5 skilled Waste Operatives on-site who manage various waste equipment to improve health and safety across the site and ensure that waste is segregated properly.
With 9 waste streams present at Birmingham Wholesale Market, it is evident that this is the site’s biggest challenge. However, Birmingham Wholesale Market was appointed a dedicated Axil contract manager who ensures that waste is now segregated by stream with ease, to reduce costs, increase rebates, and increase recycling levels.
