On-site Waste Developments
Axil has recently changed the way in which waste is managed at Bespak King’s Lynn facility, which specialises in the design, development, and manufacture of cutting-edge drug delivery devices.
Improved
Rebates
Installation of baling equipment in place of compactor units, resulting in projected rebates of £16,000.
Improved welfare facilities
Redesign of the waste compound leading to an optimal waste management operation.
Transport costs reduction
Transportation expenses mitigated, with a substantial reduction in miles incurred to the disposal destination.
Challenge & solution
The requirement
The Challenge
Bespak’s previous waste management system relied on compactors for cardboard and plastic film recycling. This method was not only costly but also lacked the efficiency needed to align with recycling goals.
The Solution
Axil proposed a strategic shift to baling materials, targeting cardboard and plastic film annually. This transition resulted in a transformation for Bespak.
Improved recycling rate
The benefit
Bespak is a global market leader in the design, development, and manufacture of drug delivery devices, providing inhalers, auto-injectors, and nasal technologies, as well as development and manufacturing services.
By baling 120 tonnes of cardboard and 70 tonnes of plastic film annually, Axil has not only transformed waste management, but also generated significant benefits for Bespak, which will lead to financial income, cost savings and operational efficiencies.
Innovations and Waste Solutions
Financial
savings
Baling technology led to an impressive annual cost reduction of approximately £10,000 in collection expenses. Additionally, the removal of three compactor units created space for two balers, a Zappshelter, and storage facilities, resulting in a better use of the space and enhanced operational delivery.
Environmental impact
The transition resulted in a commendable three-tonne reduction in the carbon footprint, directly contributing to Bespak‘s sustainability goals.
Revenue Generation
Projected rebates of around £6,000 for cardboard and up to £10,000 for plastic film are anticipated, subject to market conditions and material quality.
Capital investment
Axil shouldered the capital investment, with Bespak incurring rental charges over a 36-month period. Remarkably, the value of the recovered commodities each year more than offsets these charges, ensuring Bespak still reaps significant financial benefits.
Transportation efficiency
Removal of compactors led to reduced transport movements, translating to further cost savings and reduced emissions.
Enhanced safety and efficiency
The transition from compactors to balers eliminated the risk of contamination, providing a safer and more efficient waste disposal process. Material is directly placed into the baler, mitigating potential hazards associated with compactors.
