Earth Day 2022: Invest in Our Planet

Friday 22nd April 2022 marks the 52nd annual Earth Day. Starting in 1970, Earth Day is widely recognised as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to transform change human behaviour and create global, national and local policy changes.

Earth Day drives a year of energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to create a new plan of action for our planet.

Invest In Our Planet

This year’s theme is ‘Invest In Our Planet’, and is focused on accelerating solutions to combat our greatest threat, climate change, and to activate everyone – governments, citizens, and businesses – to do their part. When it comes to climate change, money talks, and continued investment in education, innovation and implementation will be key to saving our planet whilst we still can.

Each year, warnings around climate change become even more frightening, with the IPCC recently revealing that any further delay in concerted global action will “miss a brief and rapidly closing window to secure a liveable future”.

Earth Day should spur governments, businesses, and individuals alike to consider steps they can take in the year ahead to make a difference.

Getting involved

As a society, we need to consume less, and encourage the reduction and re-use of materials wherever possible. Recycling is just the start in creating a circular economy – we need to focus on changing our collective attitudes and behaviours towards consumption too.

ESG has been taking an increasingly prominent position in boardrooms over recent years, and many businesses have committed to ambitious environmental pledges. Now recognition of climate change by these organisations has been achieved, it’s time for businesses to act on their promises and turn their sustainability commitments into tangible action.

At Axil Integrated Services, we’re focused on helping our clients and community understand and adhere to the principles of the waste hierarchy – a framework that was introduced as a guide for businesses to manage waste streams and work towards preventing waste in the first place.

In order of importance, they are Reduce, Recycle and Recover, giving priority to preparing waste for reuse, then recycling, and then to other recovery methods. Disposal, therefore, becomes the last resort.

Following the waste hierarchy model is just one way of achieving Zero Waste to Landfill. There are a multitude of other steps businesses and individuals can take to reduce their waste, consumption, and ultimately become more environmentally friendly – and we are here to help.

This Earth Day, where the theme is #InvestInOurPlanet, organisations around the world should be reminded of the importance of investing in practical solutions that put them on the path to achieving their ESG pledges and getting to zero-waste.
