Key Metrics
c.76 tonnes Scope 3 CO₂e saved per year
Carbon dust moved from landfill to recycling, delivering a measurable reduction in Scope 3 emissions.
Minimal cost
Delivered via Axil’s existing hazardous transport and UK recycling network. Only £118.20 PA extra.
100% Recycled
| D1 → R3
All carbon dust is now 100% recycled, achieving zero landfill and full circularity.
Reused in UK-Made Fitness Equipment
Recovered material is turned into valuable secondary resources for UK-made fitness gear.
Built-In Sustainability
Now a standard process at the customer’s facility, fully embedded in their waste strategy and operations.
The Challenge
Who would have thought? A waste stream once destined for landfill, carbon dust, is now part of the circular economy, used to manufacture fitness equipment in the UK. One organisation’s waste truly became another’s resource.
Our aerospace customer faced a stubborn challenge with high Scope 3 emissions driven by landfill disposal:
- Carbon dust accounted for 101 tonnes of their 165 tonnes of annual waste.
- This represented 61% of total waste, all previously classified as D1 (landfill disposal).
- The landfill route was a significant contributor to Scope 3 emissions, with no viable recycling option available at the time.
- Costing them both money and environmental credibility.
They challenged Axil to rethink the unthinkable: could carbon dust be recycled?
What Axil Did
Axil approached the challenge with intelligent problem-solving, regulatory insight, and a clear focus on sustainability. Our waste experts worked methodically to develop a compliant, scalable, and innovative recycling route:
Investigation &
Sample Testing
We began by analysing carbon dust samples to assess potential for safe reclassification and alternative treatment routes beyond landfill.
Sourcing the Right Partner
Through detailed research, we identified a certified UK manufacturer capable of safely processing the material and turning it into new products – including fitness equipment.
Compliance & Pre-Acceptance
The carbon dust passed stringent pre-acceptance checks, allowing us to reclassify the waste from D1 (landfill) to R3 (recycling)—a key regulatory milestone.
Real-World Testing & Implementation
A trial batch was successfully processed in September, confirming performance, safety, and product quality. This cleared the path for full-scale implementation.

Conclusion
This is more than just a recycling story – it’s a change of mindset.
With targeted analysis, compliant routes, and bold thinking, Axil and our aerospace client proved that no waste is beyond recovery.
What was once considered useless now builds strength, literally – as fitness products in homes and gyms.
From landfill to lifting – now that’s a powerful shift.
