National Careers Week 2025

When I started looking for a new role, I wanted to make a real difference. I wasn’t just looking for a job – I was looking for a company whose objectives and ethics aligned with mine. The job alerts flooded in, many boasting of “green careers” and “sustainability opportunities.” But with new legislation on the horizon, what does that actually mean?

Even now, I still get emails promising roles in the sustainability sector, but the term “green” is often used so loosely that it’s lost its meaning. As we mark National Careers Week, and Green Careers Week coming later this year, it’s the perfect time to challenge what a truly sustainable career looks like.

Ours is a sector in transition. Advancements in waste treatment, recycling, and resource recovery are driving the shift toward a decarbonised circular economy. At the same time, we’re navigating constant legislative changes, economic pressures, and market volatility. To thrive in this space, companies need more than just a sustainability slogan – they need to act with purpose and integrity. With new greenwashing rules kicking in from April, we should be steering clear of vague terms like “green,” “eco-friendly,” and “biodegradable.” If something takes 100 years to biodegrade, is it really sustainable? At Axil, we believe in cutting through the noise and focusing on real, measurable impact.

When I joined the waste industry 18 months ago, I thought I understood sustainability. I’d read the articles, taken some courses, and kept up with industry trends. But nothing compares to hands-on experience. Working alongside passionate, knowledgeable colleagues at Axil has reshaped my perspective.

This industry isn’t just about managing waste -it’s about unlocking value, stewarding resources, reducing environmental impact, and empowering communities. If you really want to understand what’s happening to our planet and be part of the solution, waste management is where you should be.

There’s a common misconception that working in a “green” sector automatically means making a difference. But ticking boxes and making bold claims doesn’t equal real sustainability. Many organisations talk the talk without walking the walk, leaving employees disillusioned.

It’s different here. Sustainability isn’t a marketing tool—it’s embedded in how we operate. We don’t just focus on waste; we focus on people, too. In 2024, 27% of roles were promoted from within, proving that a career in waste management isn’t just about the planet—it’s about building a future for individuals and teams.

A real green career isn’t just about the industry you work in; it’s about the way an organisation operates and the opportunities it creates. Here’s what to look for:

  1. Continuous Learning – This industry evolves fast. From technological advancements to regulatory changes, staying ahead requires ongoing education and adaptability.
  1. Authenticity – Actions speak louder than words. A truly sustainable business aligns its operations with its values, making decisions that deliver real environmental and social impact.
  1. People First – Sustainability isn’t just about the planet; it’s about creating meaningful, long-term career opportunities and building a culture of growth and development for communities
  1. Tangible Impact – Whether it’s cutting CO2 emissions, improving recycling rates, or reducing waste, seeing the real-world results of your work is what makes this career rewarding.

The waste industry opened my eyes to the impact of a career that truly matters. It’s where practical solutions lead to meaningful change. Sustainability here isn’t just about protecting the planet – it’s about empowering people and creating value throughout the supply chain. If you want a career that’s authentic and driven by a genuine desire to make a difference, the waste industry is the place to be.

If you want more than just a job – if you want to make a difference that’s real, measurable, and impactful – Axil is the place to be
